New MoKan Trailhead offers a rest stop along East Austin's expanding trail network - Austin Monitor
Briefly

A neglected patch of land between Bolm Road and train tracks has been transformed into a trailhead for the Mokan Trail. Opened this spring, the site includes seating, a fountain, and aims to enhance mobility options without cars. Funded by a $500,000 mobility bond, it features drought-tolerant trees and plants. However, it currently lacks adequate shade. An irrigation system has been installed for the trees, and future growth is expected to provide more shade over time, with ten drought-tolerant trees being planted.
The triangular trailhead opened quietly this spring along the Mokan Trail, which runs parallel to a section of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas rail line and connects to the Southern Walnut Creek Trail.
The project cost about $500,000. The money came from a 2016 voter-approved mobility bond. It's part of the city's effort to expand its urban trail network.
Ten trees were planted at the site, a mix of crepe myrtles and cedar elms, species chosen for their drought tolerance and moderate growth rate.
The trailhead's surface is covered with decomposed granite and recycled bricks from a downtown construction project, with a concrete pad and an underground irrigation system.
