French museum uncovers in storage picture by Renaissance woman master
""People told me 'it's a northern painting,' and I said 'no, it's an Italian painting, Bolognese in spirit from A to Z.' Everything is reminiscent of it.""
""The painting is in excellent condition; it hasn't been badly restored in the past, so it hasn't been distorted. The restoration will enhance it.""
A northern France provincial museum has revealed a previously unsung painting by Lavinia Fontana, a significant Italian Renaissance woman artist. The artwork, "Portrait of a Gentleman, his Daughter and a Servant," was found in storage, showing a well-to-do family in detailed attire. As part of a restoration program, expert Philippe Costamagna identified the piece, previously misattributed to Pieter Pourbus. The museum anticipates that restoration will further enhance the painting, which adds to Fontana's legacy, being one of the early women to have a successful career in painting.
