Council approves grant award to replace Barton Springs Road Bridge - Austin Monitor
Briefly

The City Council's recent unanimous vote to accept $32 million in federal grant funding for replacing the aging Barton Springs Road Bridge marks a significant resolution in a long-standing debate. Built in 1925, the bridge has been deemed structurally adequate but suffers from narrow sidewalks and inadequate bike lanes. Council Members have underscored the historical significance of the bridge even as safety concerns prevail. Discussions about whether to rehabilitate the structure instead of outright replacement persist among Council Members, balancing historical value with modern safety standards.
"It's quite possible that at the next biannual inspection in 2026 I may be required to load limit that bridge in the interest of public safety," he said.
"If those two things are in conflict, safety always comes first to me," said Council Member Ryan Alter, highlighting the ongoing debate between preservation and safety.
Council Members Ryan Alter and Marc Duchen both seemed torn about the prospect of demolishing the bridge and asked about the feasibility of rehabilitation rather than demolition.
The bridge, built in 1925, is in fair condition but does not meet current design standards, raising concerns about narrow sidewalks and bike lanes.
