Danish architects Mathias Mentze and Alexander Ottenstein led a meticulous renovation of a historic 275-square-meter apartment in Frederiksstaden, Copenhagen, maintaining its original 1870s charm. Challenged by restrictions from Denmark's listing regulations, which include all non-original changes from the past, their process involved extensive research into historical features and ongoing consultations with the Danish Agency for Culture. They aimed to restore the apartment to its original glory, revealing historic flooring and original plasterwork after removing layers of modernization from the 1990s, achieving a blend of modern functionality and classic elegance.
When a building is listed in Denmark, it takes effect from the moment the decision is made, including all the non-original details that have been added over the years. This was a challenge as we wanted to bring it back to its original glory, not how it was changed and damaged up until the 1990s.
Everything had to be designed and discussed again and again.
