Ann and Greg Hughes combined their skills in architecture and engineering to create a modern home in Rathangan, Co Offaly, on a site that originally housed an old cottage. Working together since 2014, they focused on sustainable design, reorienting the house to better suit its surroundings. Ann's architectural insight led to the construction of an extension that enhanced family living space and addressed practical issues like wind exposure. Their project reflects modern living while adapting to the lifestyles of their growing family.
The extension firstly provided a prominent front entrance and a hallway. Secondly, it gave us another living room, because at that stage, we were growing our family.
As an architect, I always try to situate a house within its site, rather than orienting it so that it's perfectly aligned to the road.
Even on a sunny day, I'd find myself reaching for a cardigan because of the cold wind.
The plan was to utilise the house's aspect. In the 80s and 90s, there was a drive by the county council to build houses facing on to the road in a line.
