casa montision emerges from historic mallorca structure with renovation by jordi herrero
Briefly

Casa Montisión in Palma de Mallorca is a transformed former store into a private residence, incorporating scale, structure, and light. The existing L-shaped footprint maximizes natural light access from two narrow streets, complemented by an internal courtyard. An initial high ceiling allowed for a livable mezzanine after lowering the ground floor. The ground floor features micro-cement finishes, promoting reflection and a neutral ambiance, while independently accessible mezzanine bedrooms enhance spatial layering and light distribution, contributing to an expansive feel despite compact dimensions.
The site’s original character - a high ceiling with a partial mezzanine - suggested potential, though the vertical clearance was limited.
The existing L-shaped footprint connects two narrow streets, each providing modest access to natural light and ventilation.
Despite the building's compact envelope, the architects' use of light and volume generates a sense of calm expansiveness.
A stair links the lowered ground floor to two independent mezzanine bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, creating a sense of spatial layering.
