The UK's Architects Registration Board (ARB) has introduced an action plan to reform the qualification process for aspiring architects. The changes are designed to enhance transparency, quality, and support through a standardized process for gaining practical experience. Key features include a new Record of Competency (ROC), which will allow trainees to log their development consistently. This initiative aims not only to ensure uniform skill acquisition among architects but also to clarify roles and responsibilities between educational institutions and practices that host trainees. Insights from industry partners will guide these changes, marking a significant shift in architectural education.
"This is about making sure all future architects are equipped with the same essential skills and knowledge - regardless of where they train," said Alan Kershaw, Chair of ARB.
"The new co-ordinating role will need to work for all learning providers," Kershaw explained. "That's why we're designing it with them - to make it flexible, effective, and rooted in reality."
