Adjaye Associates Designs International Children's Cancer Research Centre in Ghana

The International Children's Cancer Research Centre (ICCRC), designed by Adjaye Associates and funded by the Wish4Life Foundation, will be located in Kyebi, Ghana. The ICCRC aims to address the severe disparities in childhood cancer survival rates, currently 10% in the region compared to 80% in the U.S. This facility will combine local approaches with international expertise, featuring a hospital, research laboratories, training institute, and support centers. Its biophilic design is rooted in the Akan worldview, promoting a harmonious relationship with the environment while ensuring financial self-sufficiency for sustainable care.
The ICCRC aims to address the stark disparity in survival rates for childhood cancers, innovatively pairing local approaches with international medical expertise to improve care.
This project will be the first in the region to focus solely on treating childhood cancers, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to healing, education, and community engagement.
Adjaye's design concept for the ICCRC reflects the Akan worldview, integrating biophilic design principles to harmonize built structures with the surrounding forested landscape.
By emphasizing financial self-sufficiency, the ICCRC endeavors to establish a sustainable model for pediatric healthcare that can be replicated in similar contexts.
