Matty J transformed his outdated 1990s kitchen into a serene, modern space reflecting Japandi design principles. Collaborating with architectural designer Sébastien Markoc, he updated the dark wooden cabinetry to light wood, incorporated fluted fronts, and chose a beige quartzite countertop after realizing white was too stark. The renovation also included new lighting fixtures for a brighter atmosphere, flooring updates, and a soft, calming paint color. Matty emphasizes the importance of seeing materials in-person to ensure a harmonious look.
I originally had my heart set on white countertops, but when I saw them in-person, they were way too bright for the space.
I knew I wanted a space that felt peaceful and calming, so choosing the right tones and textures just clicked.
