This Kitchen Was "a Sea of Natural Maple Cabinetry" Until Its Surprising, Stunning Makeover
"Winters' clients were a young family who had bought the home but hadn't moved in yet. It was up to Winters to combine the husband and wife's design dreams (his: wood cabinetry; hers: lots of personality and color). "The new cabinets were custom-made (and the uppers were painted with Sherwin-Williams's Merlot), a wall was opened between the kitchen and bar area, new countertops and backsplash were installed as well as plumbing, lighting, and appliances updated. An outdated late-1990s kitchen with natural maple cabinetry, sponge-painted walls, Corian countertops, and a perpendicular island produced a chopped, golden-orange feel. A young family's opposing wishes—wood cabinetry for the husband and colorful personality for the wife—were reconciled by mixing natural walnut with a berry tone. The layout was rethought with an architect, demolition followed, and custom cabinets were installed with uppers painted Merlot. A wall between the kitchen and bar was opened, new countertops and backsplash were added, and plumbing, lighting, and appliances were updated. The project took four months and cost about $275,000.
