During a recent City Council meeting, Austin's Convention Center director Tricia Tatro announced plans for the world's first net-zero carbon convention center, aiming for a world-class design. Currently ranked 66th in size among U.S. convention centers, the remodel will elevate Austin's facility to 35th, enhancing its capacity to host larger and multiple concurrent events. Set to close in April and reopen in Spring 2029 as 'Unconventional ATX,' the redesign will feature 550,000 square feet indoors and a 70,000 square foot outdoor public space, showcasing LEED Gold standards for energy efficiency.
Tricia Tatro, director of the Austin Convention Center, promised during Tuesday's City Council work session a "world-class design" and the "first net-zero carbon convention center in the world."
