A Designer Revived His Family's 75-Year-Old Apartment - And Kept the Dreamy Wood Paneling
"This 1000-square-foot apartment in Mexico City's Colonia Narvarte neighborhood has a storied history. It was built around the 1950s, so the apartment is over 75 years old, but incredibly it has been owned by Octavio Herrejón 's family for three generations. It was first owned by his grandmother's sister, then by his mother, and then two years ago Octavio moved in."
"When it came to adding his own personality to the space, it was important to Octavio to respect the apartment's original elements, like keeping the wood walls and floors. But he did remove the dated wallpaper. Then, he integrated a collection of some iconic mid-century modern furniture pieces, which he layered with a mix of contemporary finds, too."
The 1,000-square-foot apartment in Colonia Narvarte dates to the 1950s and has remained in one family for three generations. Octavio Herrejón moved into the apartment two years ago and prioritized preserving original mid-century elements such as wood paneling, wood floors, and period steelwork. The apartment had been continuously occupied until his move, keeping much of its architectural charm despite some old-fashioned finishes. Octavio removed dated wallpaper, retained original wood surfaces, and furnished the space with iconic mid-century pieces layered with contemporary finds to introduce personal character while honoring original features.
