A Pennsylvania Tudor revival home required a kitchen renovation due to an impractical layout. Architect Mindy Kelson O'Connor described the existing kitchen as a functional disaster, with blocked aisles and cramped conditions. The redesign aims to incorporate a spacious island for meal prep and socializing, and enhance the kitchen's connection to the dining room and outdoor spaces. This involved removing several partition walls and implementing new design elements such as windows and lighting to create an open, inviting atmosphere for the family's cooking and entertaining needs.
Sometimes a house with good bones doesn't always have the best layout or flow - especially when it comes to the kitchen.
The existing kitchen was truly falling apart... a functional disaster.
O'Connor knew she'd need to include a big island for gathering and prepping meals... and connect the kitchen to the rest of the first floor and the outdoors.
To accommodate a much more open layout - and a better connection between the kitchen and the dining room, partition walls... would need to come down.
