Universities must teach students what freedom is - a South African course is trying to do just that
Briefly

This having-orientation is understandable given the often precarious realities of life, particularly in the global south... yet it fosters apathy in the classroom, as students' monetary aims are misaligned with true learning.
Over 2,000 students have completed the IiNtetho zoBomi course. It aims to bridge character education and vocational education by showing the interrelation of reading, writing, thinking, and being.
We hope students learn to have a say in their lives and understand how education equips them for life, promoting self-mastery through engaging in communities of inquiry.
The course is starting to receive broad institutional support, with discussions suggesting it may become common among all first-year students, reflecting a shift in educational focus.
