Dr. Isabelle Ong Gaffney's study investigates the potential of yoga to heal interpersonal trauma, a form of trauma stemming from violence within close relationships. By conducting a meta-analysis of six qualitative studies with 105 participants, the research identified four healing mechanisms of yoga: stabilization through coping strategies to mitigate trauma symptoms, authenticity, and self-acceptance. The findings suggest that yoga practices such as breathing exercises can effectively help individuals manage anxiety and trauma triggers, promoting overall emotional well-being.
"Circular breathing is a good thing if you're really anxious or having a panic attack or something. Being able to think your way towards that and make yourself do that, especially if you're losing control."
"This type of trauma usually occurs within close relationships, like those in families, intimate relationships, or communities. What makes interpersonal trauma especially damaging is the betrayal that accompanies it."
