Martina Laird, known for her role in Casualty, felt stagnant in her life and sought to reconnect with her roots in St Kitts. Separated from her Black Caribbean mother at age three, Laird's journey led to a profound reunion before her mother's death. This experience inspired her to write Driftwood, a play set in 1950s Trinidad, based on real-life events. Despite facing challenges as an actor transitioning to writing, Laird submitted her play for the Verity Bargate award, overcoming impostor syndrome.
