In Ukraine, as the fervour of war fades, the desire for life and perseverance remains strong. The conflict has generated significant symbols, from the Ghost of Kyiv to a tractor pulling a tank. Ukrainians have transformed everyday items and experiences into powerful emblems of resistance. While these symbols provided hope and meaning, they are acknowledged as ultimately transient, much like the resilience they initially inspired. As the reality of enduring conflict sets in, there's a recognition of the enduring pain ahead, serving as a reminder of the challenges still faced.
We created memes and invented symbols more quickly than we could incorporate them into our cultural code. We thought all this would save us. It probably did.
The smallest details were reframed as an aesthetics of resistance, filling us with belief in our strength and invincibility.
War fervour has subsided in Ukraine, but not the desire to live and the drive to carry on against all odds.
All symbols have one thing in common—they die out over time, just like the people who hold onto them.
