"We Value the Art of Complaining": An Oral History of the Guerrilla Girls

When we started trying to make our way in the art world, we felt like it was a level playing field. Those of us who went to art school really felt we had the same opportunities as our fellow students. However, as we moved on into our careers, we quickly discovered that the art world was far more biased than we had anticipated.
Our early street posters were designed to be instantly recognizable and confrontational. By using stark black text on white backgrounds, we aimed to expose the shocking statistics regarding the representation of women and artists of color in museums. It was a call to action for all artists and art institutions to reassess their practices.
