In Gaza, backpacks have transformed from symbols of learning to containers of survival. What once brought children joy now carries the remnants of their lives.
As evacuation orders come, we tell our children to fill their backpacks with a few clothes, knowing they may have to leave everything else behind.
Each time we’re forced to evacuate, our backpacks grow lighter, symbolizing the heartbreaking reality of having to leave behind pieces of our existence.
That first evacuation was devastating; my heart ached as I confronted the painful task of choosing what to leave behind amidst uncertainty.
