The big picture: hope within reach in 1970s New York
Briefly

Mark Cohen's new book, "Tall Socks," compiles previously unprinted photographs taken while he studied at New York University. These images encapsulate the city's gritty street life of the 1970s, before efforts to clean up urban spaces. Each picture holds memories of a nostalgic past and portrays the vibrant characters of the city, from the Bowery to Coney Island. The photographs evoke a sense of anticipation and storytelling that reflects the era's cultural backdrop, drawing connections to the art and music of the time, notably the Velvet Underground.
In breaks from classes, he would wander the streets of the city taking pictures. Nearly all those images were unprinted and until recently existed only as negatives.
Cohen's pictures themselves, as you turn the page, carry a similar sense of anticipation. They capture that period, before attempts to sanitise the street life of the city.
