In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary. Okay, not really. The students were actors: Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard. They were shooting a mockumentary - a low-budget, unscripted horror movie designed to look non-fictional.
Nonetheless, The Blair Witch Project became one of the biggest successes in indie film history, grossing $250 million globally, a remarkable return of 4,000 times its production cost. Its viral marketing campaign, featuring fake police reports and missing persons posters, played a significant role in its success.
