Pat Steir, Whose "Waterfalls" Dazzled, Dies at 87
"I wanted to be a great artist, not in the slang use of 'great,' but fantastic—reaching the soul of other people. This ambition drove Pat Steir throughout her life."
"I thought that since I was doing something that nobody could imagine I could do, I could do anything. This mindset empowered Steir in her artistic journey."
Pat Steir, known for her 'Waterfall' paintings, died in Manhattan at the age of 87. She co-founded New York's Printed Matter bookstore and was a founding board member of the feminist journal Heresies. Despite achieving fame later in life, Steir was dedicated to painting from a young age. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she studied at Boston University and Pratt Institute. Steir faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated art scene but found empowerment in her unique position, believing it allowed her to explore her artistic potential freely.
