My Best Friend Lived an Extraordinary Life. Why Did He Take It So Soon?
"Will was the most popular kid in our class by a country mile. In fifth grade, when elected to the student council, he and the other class representatives had to choose inspirational quotes to appear next to their photos in the yearbook. Will chose a line from the 1993 movie The Sandlot: 'Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.' Decades later, that would turn out to be true. Just probably not in the way Will expected."
"In 2001, Will began his freshman year at Lynchburg College in Virginia, while my brother and I went to Trinity College in Connecticut. We joined the lacrosse team, and during spring break played our second game of the season at Lynchburg. Will met us on campus before the game. He seemed like his usual self, but I got the impression his classes weren't going well."
In 1989, two boys started first grade at an all-boys school, unaware they were twins. They became best friends, sharing interests like watching 21 Jump Street. One boy, Will, was notably popular and chose a memorable quote for the yearbook. After graduating, they attended different schools. Will struggled academically in college, failing out after his first semester, which marked a significant change in their paths.
