"I called myself a 'little prairie dyke' cause I was from the Canadian prairies," says legendary lesbian comedian and activist Robin Tyler in the opening moments of Netflix's new documentary Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution.
Outstanding showcases how queer comedy, rooted in joy and resistance, has been central to historical events like the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS crisis, emphasizing the importance of getting the last laugh even in today's political environment.
"Discussing history is about fortifying the present for the future [...] So it's always been really important that we understand where we came from so that we know where we're going and where we can go as creatives and also as a society," says playwright and producer Roger Q. Mason.
