Cambridge Typewriter, a vintage typewriter shop owned by Tom Furrier for over 30 years, will close after more than half a century due to his retirement and physical toll from the job. Despite a nostalgic resurgence among young customers in recent years, the business has faced struggles due to the digital age. Furrier has serviced about 30,000 typewriters and has a long history with celebrated writers and local academics. His decision marks the end of an era for this iconic shop, filled with vintage typing relics and memories.
This tiny shop is a mid-century relic... with dozens of vintage manual typewriters emblazoned with names such as Underwood, Remington, Smith-Corona, and Royal.
Furrier says he's ready for retirement... Decades of lifting and fixing typewriters have left him with worn cartilage in his hands and chronic back pain.
