Evy Poumpouras, a former U.S. Secret Service agent, reflects on her unique travel experiences that began in Greece, where her immigrant parents sent her as a child. Growing up in modest conditions taught her flexibility and gratitude for both her American life and her Greek roots. Her early travels, including a pivotal study abroad in Italy, ignited her longing for exploration. Poumpouras emphasizes the importance of embracing challenges and learning from experiences to become smarter travelers, a philosophy shaped by her diverse background and professional experiences.
The only place I ever went in my childhood was Greece. My parents were immigrants, and the main reason they sent us back to the "motherland," was child care.
When you grow up like that, it's just another home. I saw two unique worlds... it made me more adaptable. You appreciate the things you have at home, but you also appreciate the simplicity of village life.
I felt like I needed to see more of the world. My first study abroad was in Italy. My mindset was that Greece is next to Italy.
As a traveler, I always try to embrace every experience and challenge as a learning opportunity, believing that adaptability is key in navigating the world.
