Raimond Gaita initially declined numerous offers to adapt his book, wanting to ensure the portrayal of mental illness in the story was respectful and avoided sentimentality.

Actor Richard Roxburgh was moved by the book and felt compelled to adapt it into a film, despite not having prior experience in directing, leading to a successful production.
