"For my Unrwa colleagues on the ground in Gaza, the constant fear of being killed by bombs and guns may have abated, but there is still much to worry about access to shelter, food and clean water remains challenging, and winter is approaching fast. There is no time to lose in tackling widespread hunger and disease. The scale of physical and psychological trauma is immense, and expectations about access to healthcare and education are growing."
"Basic security is needed for recovery to take a firm hold. The ceasefire must be buttressed by an international stabilisation force mandated to maintain calm, protect critical infrastructure and guarantee humanitarian access. Such a force would create the necessary space for Palestinian institutions to be rebuilt."
After two years of brutal warfare in Gaza, a fragile ceasefire provides temporary respite to an exhausted population. Fear of being killed has lessened for some humanitarian workers, but access to shelter, food, and clean water remains severely constrained and winter is approaching. Widespread hunger, disease, and massive physical and psychological trauma demand urgent action amid rising expectations for healthcare and education. The UN and UNRWA possess expertise and resources to respond at scale but require freedom of movement and entry for supplies and personnel. Lasting recovery needs basic security, an international stabilisation force, rebuilt institutions, reliable public services, and a credible political pathway to peace and human rights.
