Mass protests began on December 28, 2025, over Iran's struggling economy and escalated into nationwide antiestablishment demonstrations. Security forces carried out a brutal crackdown that rights groups report has killed thousands; Norway-based Iran Human Rights verified at least 3,428 deaths while HRANA verified 2,885. An internet blackout imposed since January 8 has severely hampered independent verification of casualties. Western bodies including the EU and UN condemned the Iranian government's actions. President Donald Trump publicly urged new leadership in Iran, accused Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of destroying the country, and criticized the use of mass violence against protesters.
