"did not have the customary departure stamps in their passports,"
"expressed an intention to apply for asylum."
"It's dire,"
"When I came onto the plane it was excruciatingly hot. There were lots of children just sweating and screaming and crying."
A charter plane carrying 153 Palestinian passengers arrived from Kenya at Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport and was held on the tarmac for around 12 hours. Immigration and police officials said the passengers lacked Israeli exit stamps, had not provided local addresses, and did not indicate how long they planned to stay, and authorities noted none had expressed an intention to apply for asylum. A pastor boarded the plane and described extreme heat and distressed children. The Ministry of Home Affairs later allowed disembarkation, a local NGO provided accommodation, 23 passengers continued onward, and 130 remained in the country. Information about the flight operator was contradictory and reports linked the passengers to Gaza departures after Israeli easing of exit restrictions.
