Muslims across the world set to begin Ramadan DW 03/01/2025
Briefly

Muslims worldwide will commence Ramadan, with most Sunni-majority nations, including Saudi Arabia, beginning the holy month on Saturday. Indonesia confirmed the start date based on moon sightings, while Iran marks it starting Sunday. Beyond fasting, Ramadan emphasizes charity, community, and spiritual reflection. Various countries have unique traditions, such as Indonesia's parades and grave cleaning rituals. Overall, Ramadan serves as a time for believers to unite, reflect on the impoverished, and strengthen their connection to faith through various practices and observances.
"The Supreme Court has decided that tomorrow, Saturday, is the first day of the month of (Ramadan)," the official Saudi Press Agency announced.
During Ramadan, believers are encouraged to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during daylight hours. Donating to the poor is also encouraged.
In Indonesia, parades and cleaning graves are also a part of the festival. The fasting is supposed to remind believers of the suffering of the poor and bring them closer to God.
Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, the Palestinian territories, Sudan and Tunisia will also begin the daytime fast on Saturday.
