Middle East updates: Palestinians killed at Gaza aid site DW 06/01/2025
Briefly

International outrage has been directed at Israel for its controversial handling of humanitarian aid delivery in the Gaza Strip amid ongoing conflict. On Sunday, Israeli forces fired on Palestinians queuing for aid, resulting in at least 21 fatalities and numerous injuries, according to multiple witnesses. The dire humanitarian situation is exacerbated by a months-long blockade and inadequate aid distribution. While a US-backed initiative seeks to facilitate aid delivery, criticism about safety and proper reach to those in need persists, particularly as UN agencies continue to refuse collaboration with the implementing body.
There was fire from all directions, from naval warships, from tanks and drones,” stated Amr Abu Teiba, an eyewitness present during the aid distribution tragedy.
The population of the Palestinian enclave has been starved by a monthslong Israeli blockade that sparked international outrage, even from some of Israel's closest allies.
The UN said that the first deliveries of aid had been minimal and even then failed to reach the people in need.
Local health officials have reported that prior to Sunday, six people had been killed and several more wounded by live fire at GHF distribution sites.
