Louise McSharry: Supposedly there's a ceasefire, yet people in Gaza are still being killed - and their stories must be heard
"Every week for two years in my podcast's news catch-up episode, we talked about Palestine. Then, last week, we didn't. It wasn't a big decision. It just happened. The podcast aims to catch people up on the big news stories of the week and I trawl through the papers and news websites to find them. Last week, that didn't include Gaza."
"That doesn't mean the horrors occurring there have stopped. Sadly, they absolutely persist, despite a so-called ceasefire having been declared on October 10. Having destroyed all the hospitals and universities and most of the schools and homes in Gaza, as well as reducing its population by more than 70,000, Israel agreed to stop bombing the region. Then, almost immediately, it started again."
More than 340 civilians have been killed in Israeli attacks since a ceasefire was declared on October 10. Limited, desperately needed humanitarian supplies have begun reaching the Gaza enclave. The declared ceasefire was followed almost immediately by renewed bombing and ceasefire violations. Hospitals and universities have been destroyed, along with most schools and homes across Gaza. The enclave's population has been reduced by more than 70,000. Ongoing attacks continue to cause civilian deaths and widespread destruction, while humanitarian access remains constrained and aid delivery remains limited relative to urgent needs.
