They were killed, targeted for their work," RSF Director General Thibaut Bruttin said in a statement. "Key witnesses to history, journalists have gradually become collateral victims, inconvenient eyewitnesses, bargaining chips, pawns in diplomatic games, men and women to be 'eliminated'," he added."
""The most dangerous region remained the Gaza Strip, where 29 reporters lost their lives, with the second most dangerous being Mexico, with nine deaths. The deadliest attack was a so-called \"double-tap\" strike on a hospital in southern Gaza on August 25, which killed five journalists, including two contributors to international news agencies Reuters and Associated Press, the report said.""
A total of 67 journalists were killed worldwide in 2025, up from 66 in 2024. Reporters Without Borders attributed 29 of those deaths to Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip. At least 53 of the 67 media professionals were killed as victims of war or criminal networks. Gaza was the most dangerous region with 29 reporters killed, followed by Mexico with nine deaths. The deadliest single attack was a double-tap strike on a southern Gaza hospital on August 25 that killed five journalists, including contributors to Reuters and the Associated Press. Other conflict zones such as Ukraine and Sudan also recorded fatalities, and 503 journalists were detained globally.
