""The disruption of all communications, especially Starlink network, are massive," said Amir Rashidi, director of digital rights and security at Miaan Group, an activist NGO focusing on Iran, the Middle East and North Africa. "This is a matter of survival for the regime," the cybersecurity expert told DW. He added that the Iranian authorities could maintain the blackout for a long time."
""We just want to go for a walk," was a message many of the protesters posted on social media or in private chats. The actual call to demonstrate against the regime came from Iranian Prince Reza Pahlavi, who has been living in exile in the US since 1979. Pahlavi is the son of the last shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In an Instagram video, the prince urged the Iranian people to come out into the streets or their balconies on Thursday and Friday."
The Iranian regime has blocked internet access across the country following a new wave of protests. Texting, mobile data and cellular networks are severely limited, and satellite internet via Starlink appears affected. Authorities may sustain the blackout for an extended period. Social media and private chats showed people marching and posting messages such as "We just want to go for a walk." Exiled Prince Reza Pahlavi called for coordinated demonstrations from abroad, urging people onto streets and balconies on Thursday and Friday; his Instagram video received over 80 million views. Protests began on December 28 and involve families and young citizens.
