Iran doubles down on executions amid US-Israeli war
"Raha Bahreini, an Iran expert at Amnesty International, stated that there are 'at least two dozen' political prisoners facing an imminent risk of the death penalty. These include those arrested during the January protests, individuals whose trials date back to the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' movement, and people with actual or alleged ties to Kurdish parties, the People's Mujahideen, or other opposition groups."
"Bahreini also noted that among those at risk are 'individuals who were forced to make 'confessions' under torture and are now facing charges of espionage or vague allegations such as moharebeh (war against God).'"
"The clerical regime's recent actions reflect a broader crackdown on dissent, with executions continuing even during significant cultural celebrations like Nowruz, indicating a severe stance against opposition."
In March, Iranian authorities intensified executions of political prisoners, executing 14 individuals since late February. Kouroush Keyvani, a dual Iranian-Swedish national, was executed on March 18 for alleged espionage. Following this, three young men were executed for their roles in January protests. Additional executions targeted members of the banned People's Mujahedin of Iran. Human rights experts indicate that at least two dozen political prisoners face imminent execution, many of whom were arrested during protests or coerced into confessions under torture.
