""The youngest in our house... our little baby, as we call him. I thought, Oh my God, why would you kidnap a little child?"."

Ms Heraty and seven others, including six staff and a young developmentally delayed child, were abducted from an orphanage in Kenskoff, Haiti, on August 3. The captives endured starvation, thirst, violence, threats and cramped, filthy conditions while fearing they might be killed as human sacrifices in a voodoo ceremony. Her kidnappers threatened to blow her up but kept her alive because she was valuable to them. Diplomatic efforts, including a support team appointed by Tánaiste Simon Harris, secured her release after almost four weeks. Ms Heraty runs the orphanage for children and adults with special needs and has worked in Haiti for 32 years.
