"Hadi's killers were Hasina loyalists who had escaped to India, according to the authorities. The crowd that had rapidly gathered on the night of 18 December was ready to lash out at anyone they saw as linked to the previous government. Prothom Alo and the Daily Star were targeted, despite having faced vandalism, abuse and legal action under Hasina's rule. A large mob attacked and burned newspaper offices and a cultural institution following the assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, a pro-democracy leader. The attackers were angered by Hadi's killing, which authorities say was carried out by Hasina loyalists who fled to India. The crowd targeted prominent newspapers despite those outlets having suffered harassment under the previous government. Journalists and staff sought refuge on rooftops as smoke and fire spread. Mob violence has risen sharply, with 184 deaths recorded up to November compared with 51 in 2023, including a lynching after a blasphemy rumour.
