Millions of Iranians have taken to the streets since the end of December demanding an end to the Islamic dictatorship. Security forces have cracked down on protesters, and some human rights groups estimate as many as 12,000 killed. Local activists report mass shootings and large numbers of bodies found in cities and hospitals. Iranian Americans in the Bay Area have close ties to friends and family in Iran and have held rallies through groups such as BayArea4Iran. Protesters cite economic hardship, unemployment, inflation, and lack of opportunity as core grievances driving the uprising.
