A blaze at the Wang Fuk Court high-rise complex in Tai Po killed 128 people and left about 150 missing. Authorities launched criminal and corruption investigations and detained at least one activist linked to a petition demanding accountability, independent probes, resettlement and construction oversight review. An online petition drew over 10,000 signatures before being closed and a second petition was started by an expatriate Tai Po resident. Officials warned against exploiting the disaster to disrupt the city, citing national security concerns and sensitivity after the 2019 protests and new security laws.
