The reality in Gaza, however, is grim."
"Israel's genocidal war has killed at least 72,061 people and wounded 171,715 since October 2023, according to the Ministry of Health. It has also shattered infrastructure and displaced the majority of the population. Financial hardship dominated conversations in markets this week. There is no cash among the people. There is no work. It is indeed Ramadan, but Ramadan requires money, said Gaza City resident Waleed Zaqzouq, calling on merchants to recognise people's economic struggles."
Many Gazans enter Ramadan grieving the loss of family and loved ones and cannot feel the atmosphere of the holy month. Ramadan's usual family gatherings, spiritual devotion, and generosity have been overshadowed by survival concerns during a fragile ceasefire marked by daily violations. The conflict has killed tens of thousands, wounded many more, shattered infrastructure, and displaced the majority of the population. Financial collapse left markets dominated by hardship, with people lacking cash or work and unable to afford traditional Ramadan expenses. Harsh winter weather and flooding have exacerbated suffering, killing children and damaging displacement camps. Amid devastation, some residents still attempt to maintain Ramadan traditions.
