'A beacon of hope in a living hell' - Irish surgeon's baby niece smiles amid the devastation of Gaza
Briefly

An Irish-based orthopaedic surgeon shared an image of his laughing grandniece inside a tent in Gaza surrounded by rubble and described her as a beacon of hope amid devastation. The infant requires tests to assess possible damage from blast shockwaves, but diagnostic equipment is unavailable. Six family members have been killed and others wounded; a cousin was shot at a food distribution point and a teenager carried his lifeless body home. Distribution points are described as deadly and chaotic. Nassar Hospital is the only remaining southern facility, overwhelmed, with malnutrition, scarce water, food, and medical supplies hindering care.
"My wife's 23-year-old cousin and 16-year-old nephew were waiting at a distribution point for food but her cousin stood up before being told so he was shot in the head. Her nephew carried his lifeless body home on his back. "Her nephew described to us the situation as a real-life Squid Game at distribution points. Those waiting are told to crawl for a kilometre and then run hard or they are shot. You can either come home with flour bag or in a body bag."
"I've worked in Nassar Hospital as a junior and it is the only hospital left now in the south of Gaza," he said. "My sister Seham, who survived the air strike, has to go there for follow-up appointments and said it is like a slaughter house. There is blood everywhere, people on the floor and the doctors don't know where to start or who to try and save first."
