'A beacon of hope in a living hell' - Irish-based surgeon's baby grand-niece smiles amid the devastation of Gaza
Briefly

A laughing infant named Yaqout appears in a tent amid rubble in Gaza and is described as a beacon of hope amid extreme devastation. Tests are needed to determine whether shockwaves from a blast harmed the baby, but equipment for examinations is unavailable. Six family members have been killed in the conflict, and a relative was shot dead at a food distribution point where survivors describe violent, life-or-death conditions likened to a real-life Squid Game. Nasser Hospital in the south has been hit and is overwhelmed, with blood everywhere and doctors unable to cope. Clean water, milk, vegetables and meat are scarce, and wounds are reportedly failing to heal due to dire patient conditions.
"My wife's 23-year-old cousin and 16-year-old nephew were waiting at a distribution point for food but her cousin stood up before being told, so he was shot in the head. Her nephew carried his lifeless body home on his back. Her nephew described to us the situation as a real-life Squid Game at distribution points. Those waiting are told to crawl for a kilometre and then run hard or they are shot. You can either come home with flour bag or in a body bag."
"I've worked in Nasser Hospital as a junior and it is the only hospital left now in the south of Gaza," he said. "My sister Seham, who survived the airstrike, has to go there for follow-up appointments and said it is like a slaughterhouse. There is blood everywhere, people on the floor and the doctors don't know where to start or who to try and save first."
"The baby has to undergo tests to see whether she has been damaged by shockwaves of the blast, but there is no equipment to carry out the examinations."
