Single women own millions more homes than single men in the US - and the gap is only growing
Briefly

A recent analysis by LendingTree highlights that single women are surpassing single men in homeownership rates in the U.S., owning approximately 2.72 million more homes. Despite earning only 83.6% of what men earn, single women control about 13.01% of owner-occupied homes versus 9.83% for men. This trend is evident across almost all states, with New Mexico, Mississippi, and West Virginia leading in single-women homeowners. The homeownership gap between genders is not only widening but also demonstrates changing financial priorities among women, who tend to prioritize homeownership more significantly than their male counterparts.
In 47 out of 50 states, single women who live alone are more likely to own a home than their single male counterparts.
Nationwide, single women own 11.14 million homes, while single men own only 8.42 million.
In 2022, the difference stood at 2.71 million homes. By 2023, the gap expanded by nearly 15,000 more homes in favor of women.
Experts suggest that women are more willing to make financial sacrifices to achieve homeownership.
