The Hindu Kush Himalaya HKH Women on Ice expedition, facilitated by ICIMOD, gathered nine female scientists for a hands-on exploration of the Ponkar Glacier amid a backdrop of climate change. This initiative not only aims to study the shrinking glaciers, which are vital freshwater sources, but also to encourage female participation in cryosphere science, a field traditionally dominated by men. Through interdisciplinary fieldwork, the participants sought to understand both the glaciers and their surrounding communities, shining a light on the intersection of gender and environmental science.
In the 1980s, when senior ICIMOD scientist Miriam Jackson began her glacier research in England, women were not permitted to go to Antarctica through the British program.
Now, these glaciers are shrinking substantially due to climate change. The Women on Ice team set out to explore the impacts of climate change on the Ponkar glacier.
The Women on Ice expedition seeks to bring more women into the historically male-dominated field of cryosphere science by providing hands-on experience.
Guided by cryosphere experts, participants of the expedition conducted interdisciplinary fieldwork projects to learn about glacial features and surrounding human communities.
