"I'm not really proud of how I managed it, but added the profanities picked up by courtside microphones weren't directed at the fans. It was to myself, to everyone, basically. I mean, after the loss, I just get very angry, so I say those things sometimes to myself."
"Andreeva threw her racket as she approached the net before gesturing and appearing to swear at the crowd several times as she left the court. She added that the outbursts were things that [I] really need to work on soon."
Mirra Andreeva, the defending champion at Indian Wells, lost to Czech player Katerina Siniakova 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the round of 32. Following the disappointing loss after a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory in the previous round, the 18-year-old displayed poor sportsmanship by smashing her racket multiple times and appearing to swear at the crowd as she left the court. In an interview with The Guardian, Andreeva acknowledged her behavior was inappropriate and stated the profanities were directed at herself rather than fans, stemming from intense anger and emotions following the defeat. She recognized these outbursts are issues she needs to address.
