""I started crying," she recalls. "I was like, 'I don't know if I want to go back. I think I want to stay home with Brooke.' Todd had a copier business at the time that was doing well, so he said that she didn't have to go back; they could afford for her to stay at home. "It was a random conversation," Lorraine says. "After being home for five weeks with her [Brooke], I didn't want to leave her. So we always laugh about that.""
Lorraine Pater left a promising audit career at KPMG after the birth of her first child and chose to stay home with her daughters for about a decade. Her husband Todd supported the decision financially while running a successful copier business. Later the couple pursued franchising and selected Smoothie King because it matched their active lifestyle, they were longtime customers, and they saw a nearby franchisee scale successfully. They opened their first Smoothie King in 2016 and expanded steadily to ten locations clustered in the same Florida area, managing growth on their own terms.
