During the Taliban's advance in Afghanistan summer 2021, journalist Alia reported crucial events affecting her community, especially women's rights. As restrictions re-emerged, she documented the dangers faced by women and journalists under Taliban rule. Despite threats, Alia remained committed to her role, showcasing the dire circumstances in northern Afghanistan. The Taliban's crackdown on media, including targeting female journalists, led to many needing to hide or flee. Alia's work underlined the ongoing struggle for women's emancipation in a regime characterized by severe limitations on freedoms.
We showed to the world that the Taliban have not changed and will not change. And it scares them Alia.
I grew up with the history of the Taliban's domination of women... and a lot of my work focused on the impact such radical ideology has had on women's progress in Afghanistan.
