More women enlist in the US armed forces, 1979

The Observer Magazine of 18 March 1979 looked at not just the increasing number of women within the US military 110,000 or 5.5% of the total but their changing role, too (Uncle Sam recruits Ms America').In most armies women continue to perform nursing, communications and admin work,' reported John de St Jorre, and though equal rights legislation in the US played its part in women increasingly being recruited, this was more of a pragmatic than an equitable consideration.
