How a Russian mother is helping prisoners in Ukraine DW 07/26/2025
Briefly

Irina Krynina left Russia in September 2023 with her two daughters to visit her partner Yevgeny Kovtkov in Ukraine after he was captured while fighting. She utilized a helpline called "I Want to Live" for logistical support during her journey. Initially unaware of the war's complexities, she became motivated to act after learning more about the conflict and feeling disillusioned with the Russian state. Despite her intentions, Kovtkov was unsupportive of her visit, leading to tension in their relationship.
I was completely disappointed by the Russian state ... I don't want my family and children to be held responsible for the horror that is happening. That's why I went to Ukraine to help.
When I realized what was really happening, I didn't want to stay in Russia anymore.
Upon arrival, Krynina faced disappointment. Her partner was not happy about her visit.
I didn't recognize Yevgeny. He has changed a lot, he is cold, withdrawn and anxious. War and imprisonment have clearly taken a toll on him.
